Qualifications & Experience 

Kara completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Criminology before going on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology and then a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. She has been a registered psychologist since 2004. 

 

Kara is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) and her level of expertise in clinical psychology has led to her receiving clinical endorsement with AHPRA. She is a registered member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), as well as the APS Clinical College. Kara is a board-approved supervisor.

 

Throughout her career Kara has been actively involved in clinical research, investigating many psychological concepts and interventions, and has presented the findings at several professional conferences. Kara is committed to continuing to participate in professional development to ensure she draws upon evidence-based approaches. 

 

Kara’s professional experience has been in both the private and public mental health sector. She has delivered individual therapy and group-based therapy to adolescents and adults of various backgrounds. She has worked with clients with various presenting issues and psychological concerns. She has also supervised and managed many psychologists over the years and has presented psychological research at various professional conferences.

 

Therapeutic Approach

 

Kara knows there are many potential reasons that a client will engage with a psychologist. She understands the importance of working collaboratively with clients, to ensure they feel heard. Kara prides herself on being able to empower clients to feel supported, whilst also challenged in a respectful, safe, non-judgemental and empathic therapeutic environment. 

 

Kara has completed trainings in many therapeutic frameworks. These include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), schema therapy, psychodynamic approaches, acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), positive psychology, motivational interviewing (MI) and trauma-informed therapies.

Kara’s extensive experience allows her to draw upon numerous evidence-based treatment approaches, and tailor these to each client’s individual needs and strengths.

Kara works to help her client self-reflect, and build the insight, skills and strengths they need to overcome their concerns, develop positive relationships and reach their goals to live a more meaningful and fulfilled life. In particular, Kara works passionately with her clients to help them reflect upon their thoughts, emotions, values, strengths, relationships, past experiences and behaviours so they can overcome their difficulties and create positive changes in their life. She has extensive experience with both male and female clients with the following conditions or concerns. 

 

  • Anxiety disorders (including panic attacks)

  • Depression and mood disorders 

  • Stress and worry

  • Addiction and substance use

  • Emotion regulation (including anger)

  • Communication, conflict and relationship issues

  • Trauma/ PTSD

Appointment Costs & Rebates

Appointments with Kara can be booked through our online booking system.

 

Kara provides Medicare rebates of $127 per appointment. You need to obtain a referral from a GP to be eligible for this rebate. If you have a private health insurance (with extras), you may be able to claim through it (without a GP referral).
